Therapy Dogs are Quiet Heroes
Watching a therapy dog at work is always a moving experience. After eight years of volunteering with Hogan, each interaction still feels like therapy for me too!
Therapy dogs are the best inexpensive medicine in existence. There’s no question that therapy animals are some of the world’s most unheralded heroes.
If therapy dogs could talk, the stories they would tell. They live very interesting lives. The majority of time they are much loved family pets. But a couple of hours per week, they put on their working vests (aka invisible capes) and become therapy dogs.
At CHLA, an average of 900 patients each month benefited from an individualized dog therapy visit, at the bedside, during treatment, while participating in therapy, or while visiting an outpatient clinic. Therapy dogs provided 76,000 interactions in 2023, and the demand for both broader and more specialized support continues to grow.
The dogs provide comfort to patients and their families. But sometimes the ones who benefit most from a therapy dog visit are the hospital staff. The doctors, nurses, and technicians have very stressful jobs. For the patients, a visit with a dog can, at least, momentarily take their minds off their discomfort or stress. Just walking into a room may cause a person to smile and forget their stress or discomfort for a little while.
Your charitable gift will make a difference in the lives of many young patients and their families. Any amount, big or small, will be greatly appreciated. It’s a real gift of love.
Thank you for your support!!! Xoxoxo
